I can’t stress enough how important a good lactation consultant is for a new nursing mum.
My midwife arrived one morning when my son was 3 weeks old, to see me sobbing because I was in so much pain – the skin on my nipples was torn and raw and my son would fall asleep at the breast after just 5 minutes of feeding.
My midwife was amazing and did all she could to encourage and teach me, but still my son wouldn’t latch on correctly. She encouraged me to visit Angela at Ruawai Ora (Whangarei).
Angela sat us down in a comfy chair and saw right away where I was going wrong.
She spent an hour showing me good technique, and encouraging my son to wake up for a “good feed”.
Sometimes all you need is for someone to tell you you are doing something right so that you don’t give in. My son is now 6 months old and no longer takes a full hour to feed, in fact he is often done in 5-10 minutes flat. I had always wanted to breast feed, but being somewhat ‘under-endowed’ wondered whether I ever could. I can and I love it!”
