Benefits of Breastfeeding

Breastmilk is the perfect starting food for your baby, and it provides your child with all nutrition that is required for growth and development. Nature has designed breast milk to give your baby all the nutrition that he or she needs for the first six months of life, and it helps to protect your baby against infection.

Mothers who choose to breastfeed their baby, are giving their baby a wonderful start to life.

The World Health Organisation recommends that babies are breast fed until they are two years old.

Here are some reasons why we love breastfeeding, and some benefits of breastfeeding:

Breastfeeding is great for mother and baby bonding. Health professionals will encourage you to put your baby on the breast as soon as possible after birth. That initial skin-to-skin contact is amazing for bonding. As your baby grows older, breastfeeding is still a lovely quiet bonding time.

Breastmilk is free!  (but you may find that Mum needs to eat more protein and more healthy snacks in order to make enough food for herself and her baby!)

Breastfeeding your baby means that you don’t have to sterilise bottles, you dont have to heat milk or bottles etc.

Breastmilk is always at the right temperature for baby.

Breastfeeding mothers find that through breastfeeding, it is very easy and portable to go out with baby!

When a baby is fed breast milk, the milk is easily digested by baby’s gut. Breastfeeding reduces the chance of your baby being constipated or having diarrhoea as it is a good balance food.

Breast milk contains antibodies that are passed and shared between mother and baby. This can help with infections such as colds and coughs, chicken pox and measles. In addition, breastmilk can help with things such as eczema and asthma.
